NHK Eテレ1「日曜美術館」にて大原治雄展が紹介されました。

ブラジル写真界ではすでに高く評価されており、重要な写真家の一人として位置づけられている大原治雄（1909−1999）。
17歳（1927年）で神戸港からブラジルに移住した大原は、南部パラナ州ロンドリーナで農園を経営しながら、アマチュアカメラマンとして写真を撮りつづけました。新天地で広大な農園を切り拓き、家族や仲間たちとの農作業のかたわら、身近な風景を柔らかな光をもって撮影しつづけた写真は、過酷な労働を感じさせることはなく、日常のささやかな喜び、自然の美しさ、そして人間讃歌に満ちています。それは、現代の私たちにとってもどこか懐かしく、新鮮なみずみずしさを感じさせます。
本展は、ブラジル屈指の写真アーカイブス「モレイラ・サーレス財団」の大原コレクションから約180点のモノクローム写真を展示し、日本ではまだ知られていない大原治雄の写真を、関西で初めて大規模にご紹介するものです。ブラジルの大地で生きた日本人写真家・大原治雄という新しい発見に、ぜひお立ち会いください。

Profile　大原治雄/Haruo Ohara　（1909－1999）
高知県吾川郡三瀬村（現・いの町）に農家の長男として生まれる。 17歳で家族とブラジルに渡り、サンパウロ州のコーヒー農園で働いた後、1933年、パラナ州ロンドリーナへの最初の開拓団として入植。29歳で小型カメラを手に入れ、次第に没頭する。 1951年にロンドリーナ市街地に生活を移し、農業経営をしながら国内外の写真サロンに参加。1970年代に地元新聞で紹介され、1998年には「ロンドリーナ国際フェスティバル」および「第2回クリチバ市国際写真ビエンナーレ」で初の個展「Olhares（眼差し）」展を開催し、大きな反響を呼ぶ。没後の2008年、遺族により写真と資料一式がモレイラ・サーレス財団に寄贈される。

2015年は「日本・ブラジル外交関係樹立120周年」にあたり、11月にはＮＨＫ特別番組「新天地に挑んだ日本人～日本・ブラジル120年～」が放映されました。番組内では大原治雄と、「ブラジルでもっとも有名な日本人」と言われているもう一人の日系人アーティスト、大竹富江が紹介され、ブラジル社会で信頼を築いた日系移民の姿にせまり、日本とブラジル、その120年の歴史と今を、2人の移民の人生から描きだされ大きな反響を呼びました。

Ohara Haruo – a prominent and highly regarded representative of Brazilian photography (1909–1999)
Ohara, who left for Brazil in 1927 at the age of 17 from the port of Kobe, took photographs throughout his life while running a farm in Londrina in the state of Paraná. His photographs of the landscapes around him – although taken while turning the new land into a vast farm – with this characteristic soft light, are far from making us feel the harsh world of everyday physical labor, but enchant us with the ‘freshness’ inherent to his depiction of the little joys of everyday life and the beautiful nature. While his images may appear somewhat nostalgic to us today, it may be exactly this nostalgia that in turn is what seems ‘fresh’ to us, that what is modern.
This exhibition shows 180 monochrome works from the collection of Brazil’s leading photographic institution, the Instituto Moreira Salles’, and in doing so makes accessible and introduces for the first time Ohara’s photographs at a big scale in the Kansai area. We hope to see you there!

Artist Profile　大原治雄/Haruo Ohara　（1909－1999）
Ohara was born as the eldest son to farmers in Misemura (present-day town of Ino) in the district of Agagawa, located in the prefecture Kochi on the south coast of Shikoku. At the age of seventeen he and his family immigrated to Brazil and after working as farm laborer in São Paulo moved to Londrina in the state of Paraná as one of the first to settle there. In 1951 he moved to the urban area of Londrina and started participating in photographic associations in Brazil and abroad. From the 1970s his photographs started attracting attention from local newspapers and finally, in 1998, he held his first solo-exhibition Olhares (‘Looks’) at the 2nd International Biennial of Photography in Curitiba and the International Festival Londrina which created considerable reaction from critics and visitors alike. In 2008, about ten years after his death, his family donated his photographs and documents to the Instituto Moreira Salles.

2015 is the year of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationships between Brazil and Japan, which was commemorated by NHK broadcasting the television special ‘Japanese breaking new ground – 120 years Brazil-Japan’. This program portrayed the lives of Japanese-born immigrants who built a reputation in the Brazilian society and introduced Ohara Haruo together with another Japanese-born Brazilian artist, Ohtake Tomie, as the “most well known Japanese in Brazil”. Based on the depiction of the lives of these two artist, it outlined not only the past 120 years but also the present of the Brazil-Japanese relationships for which it received wide acclaim.
